EOTC WEEK

Woohoo. The week we look forward to all year... EOTC WEEK!

This year as year 3s we learnt about how to keep ourselves safe in water.

We learnt about how to keep safe at swimming pools, in  boats, when we go fishing and swimming at beaches.

Here are a few important rules:

SWIMMING POOLS
1. Never run. You could slip and hurt yourself.
2. Always have an adult look after you.
3. Check the depth of the pool before you get in the pool.

BOATING
1. Always wear a life jacket.
2. Always let someone know where you are going.
3. Check the weather before you leave.
4. Take your phone in a water proof bag.
5. Keep all your keys in a container that floats.

FISHING ON THE ROCKS
1. Never fish alone.
2. Wear non slip shoes (not gumboots).
3. Wear a life jacket if there is any chance of big waves.
4. Do not go down to the water to untangle your line.
5. Do not turn your back to the water. You never know when a big wave us coming.

AT THE BEACH.
1. Swim between the flags.
2. Have an adult watch over you.
3. Listen to the advice from  surf lifeguards.
4. Never swim or surf alone.
5. If in doubt stay out.

We had an amazing week learning all these rules.

We also learnt that surf lifesavers have a certain uniform so everyone can see them clearly when they are on the beach.  We made our own lifeguards. Don't they look cool?

We made beach murals showing people enjoying themselves on the beach.

We spent some time in the pool with the swim school teachers showing us how to get in and out of an inflatable rubber dingy (IRB) and how to use our sense of touch to feel for obstacles if we couldn't see because it was dark (although we wore blacked out goggles). That was pretty hard to do!

We made collage jellyfish which was fun but very sticky and finally on the last day we to Red Beach to see some life guards in person.

The lifeguards were amazing. Their names were Ben, Nick and Louise. All of them have been surf life guards for several years and were very knowledgeable. They went over the rules to keep us safe at the beach and were really surprised when we knew the answers already!

They also told us how to keep safe in the sun by slipping on a shirt, slopping on some sunblock, slapping on a hat, and sliding into some shade.

We learnt that when caught in a current (when the water pulls us out to sea) that we should:
1. First check if we can stand up!
2. If we can't then raise one arm above our head straight up.
3. Don't panic.
4. Float on our back like a star fish until the lifeguard comes.

We all pretended to be the sea and one of us pretended to be caught in the current. The person trapped in the current had to do all the things mentioned above.  Finally, while he was floating on his back, Buster the lifeguard came to rescue him!

Buster had been dressed up in all the lifeguard gear previously and was just waiting for someone to rescue!

So here are lots of photos to show we really did do all this in one week!
