Mālō e Lelei. Let's Celebrate Tonga - it's People, Culture and Language.

Malo e lelei. Tongan Language Week Uike Katoangaí ó e Lea Fak-Tonga celebrates the culture and language of approximately 82,389 people of Tongan heritage who live in Aotearoa. The Tongan community is the third largest Pacific population in Aotearoa.

This week we celebrated Tongan Language Week. We answered and made up maths equations in Tongan.

We learnt a popular children's song "Malimali mai"

We watched a video of the traditional tale of "The Rat and the Octopus" and then another video on how to catch an octopus with a make-feke (octopus lure) which even looks like a rat. You have to watch the video or read the story to find out why.

Here is some of our writing retelling the story. What do you think? Didn't we do a good job?

We also drew the Tongan flag, recreated some lovely turtle artwork and of course all wore red!
