ANZAC WEEK

When we got back from our holidays we learnt about the importance of commemorating those NZ soldiers who fought in the Battle of Gallipoli during WWI.

We learnt how the brave soldiers landed at Anzac Cove amidst heavy gun fire and jumped into the sea filled with barbed wire.

We learnt about the terrible conditions the soldiers had to endure in the trenches and that war is not exciting or fun.

We learnt about  "runners"  and how dangerous their job was.

We learnt about the significance of the red poppy and the Anzac biscuit.

We took part in mock trench warfare and experienced the cramped conditions.

To experience what it was like to land at the base of a hill filled with enemy soldiers firing at you, we reenacted the battle on the back field. Rooms 23 and 24 shared the experience with us.

While it was fun, it also had a serious purpose and so after the battle, we went back to.the classroom to debrief and discuss how we felt being at the top of the hill fighting and how we felt at the bottom of the hill being fired at.

Finally we made ANZAC biscuits and as we ate them we spared a thought for those who gave their lives for us to be free.

Lest we forget.
